How to install Forefront antivirus on a standalone computer (at home)

You might want to make sure you meet the system requirements: see them at the end of this post. Although the beta of Windows 7 is not officially supported, I successfully installed Forefront and tested it with the eicar test file.

If you meet the above requirements, download the image from here: http://www.microsoft.com/forefront/clientsecurity/en/us/trial-software.aspx
(it won't expire in 120 days, but if you like it, you should definitely buy it!)

Mount the ISO or burn it to a CD/DVD.

Then, from an administrative console (type "cmd" in the Start menu and then right click on cmd.exe and choose "Run as Adminitrator", go to the CLIENT folder on the virtual drive or the CD/DVD you just burned. Execute ClientSetup.exe with the /NOMOM parameter:

(do not ignore the administrative console thing, or your installation will fail).

You should get the confirmation a few seconds later:

Go to Windows Update (Control Panel -> Windows Update in Windows 7/Vista, or Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Update in Windows XP SP3) and check for updates. You must install the Forefront update and the Forefront definitions update.

It's now time to REBOOT your computer.

As a last step, it's recommended that you test the realtime protection with the antivirus test file.

Congratulations! You have a fully functional antimalware product installed.

Project Server: Export Grid to Excel ActiveX error

If you ever needed to just export a project to Excel from Project Server Web Access, you might have very well encountered the same error message as I have:
"The ActiveX control on which this feature depends could not be created. Because of this error, you can only copy the XML data to the Clipboard. Do you want to continue?"

Fortunately there is a quick fix for this!

The next steps apply to Internet Explorer 8 RC1 and with possible slight variations will work on Internet Explorer 7 (they worked for me):

  1. Add the Project Web Access's URL to Trusted Sites.

  2. Edit the Trusted Sites Security Settings and set the "Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe for scripting" to Prompt instead of Disabled:

That's it! Hope this helps.

My config:
- Windows XP SP3
- Microsoft Office 2007 SP1
- Internet Explorer 8 RC1 (UPDATE: works on IE9 RC)
- on the server: Microsoft Project Server 2007
